Failing Compliance Checks

Law enforcement personnel are busy combating the widespread consumption of alcohol by those who are under the age of 21. In September 2011, the Illinois Liquor Control Commission recruited assistants from local colleges and high schools so that they could do their surreptitious compliance checks at local business that sell alcohol. Out of 252 businesses that they checked, 68, or about 27% failed and were fined for selling to an underage person. Twenty businesses were visited in Union and Massac Counties, and of those twenty, three Union County and two in Massac County failed and had their names printed in the newspaper. They were fined, and it’s likely that some employees lost their jobs as this is often standard procedure.

In mid-October 2011, concerns were raised regarding the homecoming festivities on the Bradley and Illinois State Universities. While many students stay busy studying or go to the games and celebrations for the excitement and fun without the necessity for alcohol, there are still many who consider drinking alcohol as a part of what they are supposed to do while they are in college, away from their parents.

Local authorities prepared by conducting alcohol countermeasure patrols. These were the same surreptitious compliance checks as previously mentioned. In this case, 24 localities were visited, and only one, a Circle K/BP gas station in Bartonville, was charged with serving alcohol to minors.

Law enforcement officials mention that the newer driver’s licenses are more difficult to fake, which means that when these businesses ask for ID, they have more help in determining whether they got the real thing or not. There is also technology available that will assist in detecting fake ID’s.

It’s a step in the right direction, and hopefully knowing that it will be harder to get alcohol will keep underage students from trying. Of course, the next step will be to keep the alcohol away from them once an adult over 21 has purchased it and taken it home. Hopefully the various programs that are requiring new students to learn more about how alcohol affects them will be of greater assistance to their making wise decisions than these deterrents will be.
