Gator Surprise

The drug dealing culture is very much on the fringes of society. They operate outside the law, and sometimes it seems a case of, “in for a penny, in for a pound.” So you get dealers who fight dogs, or buy illegal guns… or keep a pet alligator.

When police served a warrant on a suburban Chicago home, they were no doubt wearing all that cool protective gear – gear meant to protect them in case an offender decides to go “cowboy” on them. But this time, the offender went Wild Kingdom instead. Officers discovered a full grown alligator living in the bathtub of the house. The alligator, which we are told was named Snowflake, was six years old and, well, “toothy.” Six years old is still young for an alligator. They live to be 30 or so. For alligators, the phrase, “long in the tooth,” has a different connotation.

The animal was given over to the Chicago Herpetological Society and the homeowner, Nicholas Cosmano was given over to the legal system. His bail was set at $25,000. The fine for keeping an unlawful alligator is a measly $200. The reptile seems to be the least of his worries. Police found 16 marijuana plants along with paraphernalia and a 100 grams of ready-to-smoke weed.

The cops always say you have to be prepared for the unexpected in their job; that you have to always be on the alert. How exactly do you prepare for a female alligator living in a bathtub?

Snowflake is expected to end up at an alligator farm… and maybe alligator meat someday, depending on the farm.

It does demonstrate the principle of living outside the law though. In the drug dealing world, an alligator might seem like a good idea. Protection maybe or a nice conversation piece. And alligators seem friendly enough… they have a great smile.
