High Marks for Tazewell County on Booze Checks

Last week, State Police conducted Booze Checks in two counties, Tazewell and Peoria. If you aren't familiar with the counties, that's the East and West side of the city of Peoria, central Illinois. The correct name for these checks is Driving Under the Influence Enforcement patrols.

Peroria county scored eight hits for the roadside checks. One was for minor in possession of alcohol, two were DUI and the others were termed alcohol related. That's code for things like open containers which don't result in an arrest but for which a citation might be issued.

Tazewell, across the river, had zero citations issued. That's right, none at all.

The enforcement effort is funded by a program out of Washington D.C. through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration -- a bonus because State funds are in such a pinch. In what might be related news, NHTSA is reporting that traffic fatalities were down nationwide in 2010, setting a new low (lower than 2009). That's not entirely due to enforcement of DUI laws of course, but with miles traveled up as the economy improves, it's nice to see that fatalities are still down.

This program is intended to get drunk drivers off the road specifically, and alcohol is blamed for 40% of traffic deaths in Illinois. So there might actually be a connection.

Lets hope the trend to drink and drive is on a permanent downswing instead of a statistical dip. The program will continue and those who habitually drink and drive are always a target.
