Judgement Call in Drug Arrest

Every day some of our law enforcement officers face danger as they confront individuals who are involved with drug trafficking. There’s a lot of money in that business and there are a lot of consequences to getting caught. Add to that the fact that taking drugs can make a person act in a more violent manner, and the scene is set for real life drama that is probably not entertaining.

Over in Carpentersville, officers from that northwest suburban city outside of Chicago and from Streamwood had arranged a sting operation. They posed as narcotics buyers and arranged to meet with a man in the parking lot of a McDonald’s on Highway 25. After the transaction was completed, the officers identified themselves and attempted to arrest the two suspects who had just purchased drugs from them. One of the suspects tried to plow into the officers with his car, and he struck an unmarked police vehice twice. Two officers were slightly injured while exiting the car and then one of them shot at the suspect’s vehicle as it zoomed down the street.

The other suspect was arrested at the scene while police pursued the first guy for about 20 miles, all the way to Itasca.

The driver was injured and take to a local hospital. The McDonald’s on Kennedy Avenue closed down for awhile after the incident. Also, the Lakewood School District across the street from the McDonald’s went into what they refer to as a code-red lockdown. During that time all doors are locked, blinds are closed, and lights are turned off. Once they were sure that the situation had moved down the road, they loosened the lockdown, but kept the doors locked until 2 p.m. Parents received an automated call that the school was in lockdown.

While it’s not really fair to be an armchair quarterback when one was not there, some questions might be raised about whether the police should have agreed to meet a drug dealer for a sting in the middle of the afternoon at a family food establishment across the street from a school building. No doubt the parents who received those phone calls are going to ask. The idea of gunshots being fired anywhere in that vicinity is rather frightening; bullets aren’t like smart bombs – they go where they go.

Fortunately no one was injured and the suspects were caught and arrested.
